Hydrogen on Demand - Seven Tips on How to Beat Rising Fuel Prices

With fuel prices heading off over the horizon, there is a danger that the everyday motorist could be priced off the road. In this article I take a look at various ways that the average car owner can get extra miles per gallon by making the odd adjustment here and there. You will learn some tips that are so blatantly obvious and other ideas that require the dust to be blown off their covers.

1) Keep your tyres at the optimum pressure. By fully I do not mean over pressure them because you can lose traction and wear out the tyres faster. If traction and the life span of the tyres are not that important to you for whatever reason, pump 5% to 10% more air than recommended for your vehicle. Do not exceed the maximum pressure marked on the tyres itself.

2) Regularly service your car. Ask the garage if they use synthetic oil or similar low-friction oil. A good mechanic will also notify you if any of belts need replacing - pay special attention to the timing belt, depending on the make and model a timing belt requires a replacement every 50 to 60,000 miles. A new timing belt improves engine efficiency and will give a slight improvement in miles per gallon.

3) This isn't recommended, but its still worth a mention. Coasting - putting the vehicle in neutral whilst moving along and with the engine idling. Technically, this can be classed as "not having the vehicle under control" and in a driving test this would go against you. Coasting is carried out best when the road is pretty much flat or with a slight decline. It's also better when you have a clear run and there's not much traffic about.

4) Driving habits - improved driving habits equals more per gallon. Smoother gear changes, gentle acceleration when pulling away, not over revving the engine at the lights, nor driving in a low gear at high revs. Keeping to the speed limit in built up areas and on the motorway driving around 50 to 60 MPH. Be conservative with using the Air Conditioning unit (AC). The AC unit draws it power from the engine, thus, more fuel is used. If it can be helped don't use the AC at all.

5) Car sharing is another good option to save on rising fuel prices. If any work colleagues live near by and it isn't too much trouble to go slightly out of the way to pick them up and drop them off then this makes for a very viable option. Rotating on a week-to-week basis normally works well. For example, in the first week person A takes his car, collects and drops his/her work colleague. In the second week, person B uses his/her motor to collect and drop off person A.

6) Avoid using the car for unnecessary errands. If you need to pop down to the local shops try walking instead.

7) Hydrogen on Demand (HOD). This involves putting together 'off the shelf' components from a hardware store. A quart-size container is placed in the engine compartment. This device uses a little electricity out of the car's battery to separate the water into a gas called HHO (2 Hydrogen + 1 Oxygen). It is filled with distilled water and a drop of baking soda. The device gets vacuum from the airflow and 12 Volts from the car battery, which in turn produces HHO gas (Hydrogen + Oxygen) and stored in the water container making this very safe. In summary: With oil prices hitting record level highs, drastic times call for drastic measures. Electric Car Conversion in 5 Easy Steps - Do This and Never Fill Up Again

The electric car has certainly received a lot more attention lately, with the rising cost of gas. A little known fact is that you can do your own electric car conversion, without having to spend a small fortune, if you learn the basics. Let me break it down for you in 5 simple steps. The first thing you need to do is decide on what type of car you are going to convert to electric. Smaller cars usually work out best, because they are lighter and take less energy to power them. You do want to check to make sure the car you've chosen can handle the extra load of the batteries. Depending on what style of battery you choose, this extra weight could be up to 1500 lbs. Checking on the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) will tell you how much weight you can safely add. The GVWR can usually be found on the inside door panel.

Next in the process is deciding what type of motor you are going to use. You have two choices DC or AC motors. AC motors are more expensive than DC motors, so we will go with the DC type since you can also find these motors at bargain prices sometimes even free, more on that later. You will need at least a 9 inch Series DC motor, a larger one is even preferred.

Once you have the motor, you'll need a motor controller. Motor controllers basically control the speed of the motor, by taking the battery power and modulating(pulsing) the voltage to the motor at a certain rate. This modulation adjusts the speed the motor turns at, and the control signals to the controller come from a device know as a pot box, which takes the place of the gas pedal linkage in your car. So now when you press down on the gas pedal, you are moving the position of the pot box, which in turn sends the information back to the controller so it can set the motor speed.

Whew!! Too much information??? Don't worry, it sounds more complex than it really is. The next step is to choose your electric car battery and how many you can fit into your car. Typical deep cycle batteries, which is the type you need to use, weigh in at about 65-75 lbs each. Getting back to the GVWR, will tell you how many batteries you can safely install. A typical installation will generally require at least 15 to 20 batteries.

The next decision you need to make is how are you going to power your accessories. You know like the headlights, radio etc. Since these used to be powered by the alternator charging the battery, you can either install an alternator off of the new electric motor drive, or you can setup a separate dc to dc converter to charge an accessory 12 volt battery to power everything. All that's left now is to just put everything together and voila, you have just completed your first electric car conversion.

What Is With America's Fascination With Bumper Stickers?

Although bumper stickers are a worldwide phenomenon, it seems that Americans are more fascinated with the use of them than others.
